Physics 210: Computer Lab Account Creation

Please follow the instructions below carefully, particularly if you were not in attendance at one of the Labs on Thu, Sep 5

The vast majority of you will only need to concern yourselves with items 1 and 2, and will not have to take any action in response to this bulletin.

If you encounter ANY problems in following the instructions, send e-mail to Matt (choptuik@phas.ubc.ca) IMMEDIATELY explaining the situation.

INSTRUCTIONS
  1. Click on this link and look for your name in the list,

  2. If your name is listed then NO FURTHER ACTION IS REQUIRED ON YOUR PART.

However, send Matt e-mail should you want the way that your name is listed corrected/changed.

  3. If your name is NOT listed then

    1. Ensure that you have an account on the Physics/Astronomy server (your account name will be the same as your CWL).

      1. If you have an account, and are able to login to one of the PCs in computer lab (shouldn't matter which one you try),send Matt an e-mail message with your name (the way that you would like it listed on THIS PAGE) and the name of your account.

      2. If you are sure that you have an account, but have forgotten your password, or find that the password you think should work doesn't, then see Gerry Grieve, whose office is to the immedate left as you enter the lab, who should be able to help you reset your password.  Once this is done, verify that you can login to one of the PCs in the lab, then send Matt an e-mail message stating your name and the name of your account. If you still can't login, visit Gerry again and see whether he can assist.  If he can't, send Matt e-mail explaining your situation.

      3. If you are sure that you do NOT have an account then do the following:

        1. Self-register for one using the PC in the computer lab (Henn 205)  that has a "Register Here" sign on it (on the table at the back of the lab, i.e. on your left as you enter the lab).

        2. The self-registration process will generate a random password, be prepared to make a note of it (i.e. write it down), you will have about a minute to do so.

        3. Wait about 5 minutes, then try to login with your account name on any of the PCs in the computer lab (except for the one where you have self-registered).  Again, your account name should be the same as your CWL, and use the password that was generated for you.

        4. If your login is successful, send Matt an e-mail message with your name and the name of your account. Make sure that you either memorize your password, or make a note of it so that you have it on hand for subsequent labs.  We will discuss how you can change your password shortly.

        5. If your login is NOT successful (e.g. the password that you are typing doesn't seem to work), then visit Gerry Grieve, whose office is to the immediate left as you enter the lab, who should be able to help you reset your password.

        6. Wait a few minutes, then try again to login.  Whatever happens this time, send Matt an e-mail message with your name and account name and indicate whether you can or cannot login to the PCs.
