Backups for vn.physics.ubc.ca: PIII/Linux Cluster
The only machines in the cluster which are backed up are the front ends
(vnfe1,vnfe2,vnfe3).
An incremental backup is performed every night at 23:45.
This incremental backs up all files present on the system that were
modified within the past day. (All files except for the ones
listed below).
Every monday night a weekly backup is run. This weekly
backs up all files present on the system that were modified within the
past week. (All files except for the ones listed below).
A level-0 of each machine is run once every month. A
level-0 means that all files present on the system are backed up
regardless of when they were last modified. (All files except for the ones
listed below).
IMPORTANT: files with the following names do NOT get backed up.
*.dat
*.dat.gz
*.hdf
*.rgb
*.sdf
*.sdf.gz
*.segdat
*.o
core
Most of the above files are data files. Since data files can be regenerated
(and usually take up the most space) they are not backed up. Please keep this
in mind. If you have data that can't be easily regenerated (you no longer have
the code or a new data run would take too long) then please save a
copy somewhere else as a safety precaution.
REMEMBER: name your data with a .dat extension so it doesn't
fill up our backup tapes.
