Unigrid Excision Results

(May 2001)

Merger

equal mass, v=0.05 boosted scalar field initial data

scalar field: phi_bf_05.mpg (note that a variable colour scale is used)
Psi: psi_bf_05.mpg
Newman-Penrose scalar Psi4: psi4_bf_05.mpg, sampled waveform: psi4_bf.eps

(id file: id_bh_bf_05)

Psi4 from v=0.1 scalar field boost for comparison (shorter run time): psi4_bf_1.mpg

Note: I used M=8 for to define the time/coordinate scale. However at the resolution at which these results were obtained this number is fairly uncertain, and there is also some mass loss due to dissipation.

Prolate scalar field collapse

Scalar field, visualized with different color/height mappings:
sf_cyl2_phi_cm1.mpg
sf_cyl2_phi_cm2.mpg
sf_cyl2_phi_cm3.mpg

Older mpegs, from partially completed run:
scalar field: sf_cyl2_phi.mpg
Psi: sf_cyl2_psi.mpg
Psi4: sf_cyl2_psi4.mpg

Apparent horizon coordinate shape (reflection about z=0): sf_cyl2_AH.mpg
(dissipation tends to cause mass loss, and hence the horizon starts to shrink a bit after the initial accretion of matter.)

(id file: id_bh_sf_cyl2)

Notes: I used M=5 to scale the coordinates (though in the AH mpeg the spatial coordinates aren't scaled). The animations for psi4 (including mergers) were truncated a few grid-points away from the rho_max boundary, to avoid the 'mess' at the outer boundary from obscuring the animation interior (though luckily for the most part this stuff does not propagate inwards)
