UNIX and General Information

• Unix notes from Choptuik's Phy 329 course.
• Guide to Unix Systems (Physics Dept). Maintained by the Physics Computer Group. Contains overview of available systems and covers most of the basics you'll need to get going on the machines in RLM 3.118.
• UT Computation Center Unix Resources. An excellent collection of Unix resources and links including an Introduction to Unix for novices.
• UNIX Reference Desk: Another comprehensive collection of Unix and related resources.
• Internet Unix & Tutorials from North Carolina AT. Various guides and Unix links. Use with caution as some material is specific to NCAT.
• A Quick Reference for vi. This is the first document returned by the Alta Vista search '+vi +editor +tutorial'; there are literally hundreds of them out there.

Searching the Web

• Netscape Collection. Good luck if you can't find it from here.
• Alta Vista. Very comprehensive coverage. Spending a few minutes in help really pays off.
• Magellan. Has reviews/synopses of many large sites; will help you avoid stumbling into pornographic computational physics sites.

Creating HTML documents

• A Beginner's Guide to HTML (from NCSA)
• For more information, choose the How to Create Web Services option from Netscape's Help menu
• One of the easiest and most powerful ways of learning HTML is to use the Document Source feature from Netscape's View menu. Find a Web document with a layout or feature you wish to emulate, select Document Source from the View and then examine the source (which will appear in a separate window) to see how things are done.
